At a glance

Our verdict

For MacBook owners — and anyone with a Thunderbolt or USB-C laptop — this is the portable screen that feels closest to a laptop’s own display: 4K sharpness, OLED contrast and P3 colour, with charging over the same cable. It costs more than most portable monitors, it runs at 60 Hz, its glossy screen reflects bright lights, and ViewSonic does not state the adapter’s wattage, so power-hungry laptops may charge slowly through it.

Plug a MacBook into the VX1655-4K-OLED and the second screen looks like the one you are used to: a 15.6-inch OLED panel with 3840 × 2160 pixels, 100% DCI-P3 colour and 400 nits, so text stays sharp and photos keep their colour. Both USB-C ports carry video and up to 60 W of two-way power — with the included adapter plugged into the monitor, the same single cable to your laptop can also charge it. A mini HDMI port, two 0.8 W speakers, a built-in kickstand for landscape or portrait and a screen cover complete the package, at about 1.5 lb.

Why you’ll like it

  1. 01

4K on 15.6 inches gives macOS enough pixels for crisp, Retina-style text instead of the soft look of a 1080p portable screen.

  2. 02

100% DCI-P3 colour and OLED contrast match the wide-colour look of a MacBook display, so photos and video do not look washed out.

  3. 03

One USB-C cable to the laptop carries video and, with the monitor on its adapter, up to 60 W of charging — handy at a hotel desk with one outlet.

  4. 04

Everything is in the box: power adapter, USB-C cable, mini-HDMI-to-HDMI cable and a screen cover.

  5. 05

The built-in kickstand works in landscape and portrait, and two speakers handle calls and video.

Great for

  • MacBook owners who want a second screen that matches their laptop
  • Photo and video editors on the move
  • Anyone who wants one cable for screen and charging

Maybe skip it if

  • You only need an inexpensive screen for documents
  • You want a high refresh rate for gaming
  • Your laptop needs more than 60 W and you want full-speed charging through the monitor

Questions people ask

Will one cable work with my MacBook?

Yes for MacBooks with Thunderbolt or USB4 ports, which output DisplayPort video over USB-C; ViewSonic lists 3840 × 2160 as the Mac maximum. With the monitor’s adapter plugged in, that same cable can also charge the Mac at up to 60 W. A Windows laptop needs a USB-C port with DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt; otherwise use mini HDMI and the adapter.

Do I always need the power adapter?

No. ViewSonic says a laptop can power the monitor over USB-C. Plug in the adapter when you want to charge the laptop through the monitor, or when the source cannot supply power — for example over HDMI.

Can I connect a console or an older laptop?

Yes, through the mini HDMI port with the included cable; the monitor then runs from its adapter. Keep in mind it is a 60 Hz screen.
