Will one cable work with your device?

One USB-C cable carries picture and power only when your device’s USB-C port outputs video (DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt or USB4). Tap your device:

Usually works with one cable

MacBooks with USB-C or Thunderbolt ports send video over one cable. MacBook Air with M1 or M2 drives only one external display, so a portable monitor uses that one slot.

Check your port first

Only if a USB-C port supports video — look for a DisplayPort (D) or lightning-bolt icon next to it, or check the laptop’s spec sheet. Otherwise use HDMI and power the monitor from a USB-C charger.

Check your port first

iPhone 15 and newer (USB-C) mirror their screen to a USB-C monitor with a video-capable cable. A phone may not power the monitor on its own, so keep a charger handy. Lightning iPhones need an adapter and HDMI.

Check your port first

Only phones that output video over USB-C — for example many Samsung Galaxy models with DeX. Many mid-range phones charge and transfer data over USB-C but send no picture.

Usually works with one cable

iPads with a USB-C port send video over USB-C. Lightning iPads need an adapter and HDMI.

Check your port first

The Switch sends video through its dock’s HDMI. Use the monitor’s mini HDMI and power the monitor from a charger. Some monitors also accept the Switch over USB-C with extra power — check the maker’s notes.

Use HDMI and a power source

Consoles output HDMI only. Use the monitor’s mini-HDMI port and power the monitor from a USB-C charger. The Lenovo M14t has no HDMI, so it can’t be used with a console.

Use HDMI and a power source

Most desktops connect over HDMI: use the monitor’s mini HDMI and power it from a USB-C charger. A USB-C port on the graphics card or motherboard works with one cable only if it outputs video.

How we chose: We compared maker specifications for panel, resolution, refresh rate, brightness, colour, ports, power, weight, stand and box contents, then matched each model to a device and a job. Research-based, not used by us.

A portable monitor turns a laptop into a two-screen setup that fits in a backpack. The right one depends on three things: whether your laptop, phone or console can send a picture over USB-C, what you will do on it (spreadsheets, photos, films or games), and how much brightness and weight matter to you.

We built this list from maker specifications and our buying checklist. We did not use these monitors ourselves. Every pick below has a clear job, and every section says who should skip it.

First check: will one USB-C cable work?

The promise of a portable monitor is one cable for picture and power. That only works when the USB-C port on your device outputs video, which the industry calls DisplayPort Alternate Mode. Thunderbolt and USB4 ports always do. Many Windows laptops mark the right port with a small DisplayPort or lightning-bolt icon; if yours has no icon, check the laptop's spec sheet.

  • MacBook: USB-C and Thunderbolt ports send video. A MacBook Air with M1 or M2 drives only one external display, so the portable monitor uses that slot.
  • iPhone: iPhone 15 and newer, with USB-C, mirror their screen to a USB-C display. The phone may not be able to power the monitor on its own, so keep a charger nearby.
  • Android phones: only models that output video over USB-C, such as many Samsung Galaxy phones with DeX. Plenty of phones charge over USB-C but send no picture.
  • Consoles and most desktops: use HDMI. The monitor then needs power from a separate USB-C charger.

If your port does not output video, every pick here except the Lenovo still works through mini HDMI plus a charger. The Lenovo M14t has no HDMI, so it needs a video-capable USB-C port.

Best budget: InnoView 15.6" FHD

If you want a second screen for documents, video calls and browsing without spending much, the InnoView 15.6" FHD covers the basics well. It is a 1080p IPS panel at 60 Hz with two full-function USB-C ports and a mini HDMI port, so it connects to laptops, phones and consoles.

  • Best for: students, remote workers and anyone adding a screen on a small budget.
  • Key facts: 15.6-inch 1920 × 1080 IPS, 60 Hz, dual speakers and a headphone jack, about 1.5 lb.
  • In the box: a USB-C cable and a mini-HDMI-to-HDMI cable. The maker's box list has no power adapter.
  • Skip if: you work in bright rooms or edit photos. It is rated at 250 nits and 45% NTSC colour, both modest next to modern laptop screens.
  • Also note: over HDMI, or from a phone, plan on your own USB-C charger to power it.

Best value OLED: ASUS ZenScreen OLED MQ16FC

The ASUS ZenScreen OLED MQ16FC brings OLED contrast and wide colour to a mid-range monitor. It is a 16-inch 1920 × 1200 panel with 95% DCI-P3 coverage and a Delta E below 2, and it weighs 0.68 kg.

  • Best for: films on the road, photo previews and anyone who wants deep blacks without paying for 4K.
  • Key facts: 16:10 OLED, 60 Hz, two USB-C ports plus mini HDMI, kickstand and tripod socket.
  • In the box: a power adapter and three cables.
  • Skip if: you need built-in speakers or a very bright screen. It is rated at 300 nits typical, and the panel is glossy.
  • Also note: passing up to 65 W through to your laptop needs an adapter that supplies up to 90 W, according to ASUS.

Best for MacBook and 4K: ViewSonic VX1655-4K-OLED

Next to a MacBook's sharp screen, a 1080p monitor can look soft. The ViewSonic VX1655-4K-OLED is a 15.6-inch 4K OLED with 100% DCI-P3 colour and 400 nits, close to what MacBook owners are used to.

  • Best for: MacBook owners, photo and video editors, and anyone who wants one cable for screen and charging.
  • Key facts: 3840 × 2160 OLED, 60 Hz, two USB-C ports with 60 W two-way power, mini HDMI, two 0.8 W speakers, about 1.5 lb with a kickstand.
  • In the box: a power adapter, cables and a cover. With the adapter plugged into the monitor, the single cable can charge the laptop at up to 60 W.
  • Skip if: you play fast games, since it runs at 60 Hz, or you sit near bright windows, because the screen is glossy.
  • Also note: it is pricier than most portable monitors, and ViewSonic does not state the adapter's wattage.

Best for gaming and consoles: ASUS ZenScreen MB16NCG

For handheld PCs, consoles and gaming laptops, smoothness matters more than anything else. The ASUS ZenScreen MB16NCG is a 16-inch 2560 × 1600 IPS screen that runs at up to 155 Hz over USB-C, with Adaptive-Sync to reduce tearing.

  • Best for: handhelds, consoles and gaming laptops, plus work that benefits from a sharper-than-1080p picture.
  • Key facts: 400 nits, 100% sRGB, HDR10, 1.98 lb, two USB-C ports, mini HDMI, an earphone jack and a tripod socket.
  • Skip if: you want built-in speakers. There are none, so plan on headphones.
  • Also note: HDMI tops out at 120 Hz; the 155 Hz overclock needs USB-C. Up to 65 W pass-through needs an adapter of up to 80 W, and ASUS lists its suggested 30 W adapter as optional by region.

Best for business travel: Lenovo ThinkVision M14t Gen 2

The Lenovo ThinkVision M14t Gen 2 is built for the road: a 14-inch 2240 × 1400 IPS screen at about 1.5 lb with its stand, USB-C on both sides and up to 65 W pass-through charging. It adds 10-point touch and a pen with 4,096 pressure levels.

  • Best for: consultants and business travellers, ThinkPad and other Windows laptop users who want touch and pen.
  • Key facts: 100% sRGB, 300 nits, 60 Hz, an adjustable stand that tilts, lifts and pivots, and a three-year limited warranty.
  • Skip if: your laptop has no video-capable USB-C port. There is no HDMI on this monitor.
  • Also note: Lenovo lists touch and pen support for Windows 10 and 11 only, no speakers are listed, and there is no charger in the box.

Best premium: ASUS ZenScreen Duo OLED MQ149CD

The ASUS ZenScreen Duo OLED MQ149CD folds two 14-inch 1920 × 1200 OLED screens into one unit on a 360° hinge. Stacked, side by side or facing a client, it turns a laptop into a three-screen desk.

  • Best for: Windows users who juggle many windows, such as traders, developers and analysts, and presenters who face a client or student.
  • Key facts: 100% DCI-P3, Delta E below 2, DisplayHDR 400 True Black with 500-nit HDR peaks, kickstand and tripod socket, 1.07 kg.
  • In the box: a power adapter and cables.
  • Skip if: you use a Mac, ChromeOS or a phone. According to ASUS, those show only the lower screen in single-cable extend mode, and HDMI cannot extend to both.
  • Also note: it has no speakers, it is the heaviest pick here, and full brightness needs the adapter plugged in.

How to choose a portable monitor

Size and resolution. At 14 to 16 inches, 1080p looks fine for documents and video. A 2.5K or 4K panel looks sharper next to a high-resolution laptop screen, especially a MacBook.

IPS or OLED. IPS is the affordable choice and is usually matte. OLED gives deep blacks and wide colour, but it is often glossy and may cost more.

Brightness. Around 250 to 300 nits suits indoor rooms. Pick 400 nits if you work near windows.

Refresh rate. 60 Hz is fine for work and films. Gamers should look for 120 Hz or more, and Adaptive-Sync.

Power. One-cable setups draw power from your laptop. Pass-through charging lets a charger plugged into the monitor feed the laptop at the same time, which is useful on long days.

Stand, case and speakers. A folio case protects the screen in a bag; a kickstand or adjustable stand gives better angles. Built-in speakers are a bonus, and only two of our picks have them.

FAQ

Can I use a portable monitor with my phone? Yes, if your phone outputs video over USB-C. iPhone 15 and newer mirror their screen; many Samsung Galaxy phones support DeX. Keep a charger handy, because a phone may not power the monitor alone.

Do portable monitors need a power outlet? Not when your laptop's USB-C port outputs video and power. Over HDMI, from a phone, or at high brightness, you will need a USB-C charger.

Will a portable monitor work with a PS5 or Xbox? Yes, through the mini-HDMI port, with the monitor powered from a charger. The Lenovo M14t has no HDMI, so it does not work with consoles.

Is OLED worth it on a portable monitor? If you watch films or edit photos, OLED's contrast and colour are a clear step up. For spreadsheets and documents, a good IPS screen is enough and costs less.

Can I use two portable monitors? It depends on your laptop. A MacBook Air with M1 or M2 drives only one external display, while many Windows laptops can run two. The ASUS ZenScreen Duo gives you two screens in one unit on Windows.
