Our verdict

If the screen is mostly for games — a handheld on a hotel desk, a console at a friend’s place or a gaming laptop — this is the one: high resolution, a fast refresh rate and Adaptive-Sync without flagship pricing. It has no speakers, so plan on headphones through the jack or your console, and consoles over HDMI top out at 120 Hz; 155 Hz is for USB-C sources only.

The ZenScreen MB16NCG is the portable screen for play. Its 16-inch 16:10 IPS panel shows 2560 × 1600 and runs at up to 155 Hz (overclocked) over USB-C and 48–120 Hz over mini HDMI, with Adaptive-Sync to keep motion smooth and tear-free. It is rated 400 nits with 100% sRGB colour and HDR10 support, has two USB-C ports with DisplayPort Alt Mode plus a mini HDMI port and an earphone jack, and can pass up to 65 W on to your laptop. ASUS pitches it for handhelds such as the Xbox Ally X and Nintendo Switch 2 as well as phones. It weighs 0.90 kg (1.98 lb) and has a fold-out stand and a 1/4-inch tripod socket.

Why you’ll like it

  1. 01

Up to 155 Hz over USB-C and 120 Hz over HDMI make games and scrolling look far smoother than the 60 Hz of most portable screens.

  2. 02

Adaptive-Sync matches the refresh rate to the game’s frame rate, cutting tearing and stutter.

  3. 03

2560 × 1600 on 16 inches is sharper than a 1080p portable, and the taller 16:10 shape shows more of a map, page or timeline.

  4. 04

Mini HDMI with the included cable takes consoles and older laptops; USB-C takes handhelds, phones and laptops with video output.

  5. 05

Power pass-through up to 65 W lets one charger feed both the monitor and your laptop.

  6. 06

A 1/4-inch tripod socket lets you raise it to eye level on a camera tripod (tripod sold separately).

Great for

  • Handheld and console players who want a bigger, smoother screen
  • Gaming-laptop owners who want a fast second screen
  • Anyone who wants a sharper-than-1080p portable for work and play

Maybe skip it if

  • You need speakers in the monitor
  • You mainly do colour-critical photo work in wide colour
  • You want the lightest monitor for travel

Questions people ask

Will one USB-C cable work with my laptop or handheld?

Yes, if its USB-C port outputs video (DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt or USB4) — then one cable carries picture and power, and ASUS says USB-C is where the full 155 Hz is available. If not, use mini HDMI for the picture and power the monitor through USB-C from an adapter.

Can I plug in a PlayStation, Xbox or Switch?

Yes, through the mini HDMI port with the included mini-HDMI-to-HDMI cable; over HDMI the refresh range is 48–120 Hz, and the monitor needs power through USB-C. ASUS also pitches it for handhelds such as the Xbox Ally X and Nintendo Switch 2.

Does it have speakers?

No. Use the earphone jack, or headphones connected to your console, handheld or laptop.
