How we chose
We matched each pick to a type of DIYer using maker specifications, warranties and stated limits. We favored tools that suit a wide range of skill levels and left out bladed workshop machines. Research-based, not used by us.
Buying tools for someone else is tricky. DIYers have strong opinions, they may already own the obvious stuff, and battery platforms make some gifts a perfect fit and others a dud. With Black Friday on 27 November and the holiday rush close behind, this guide groups gift ideas by the kind of person you are shopping for. These picks are based on research into maker specifications and our buying checklists. We have not used them ourselves.
We deliberately left saws and other bladed workshop machines off this list. They are personal, setup-heavy purchases that most people prefer to choose themselves.
For someone buying their first power tools
A beginner needs the tools that get used on almost every project. For most people, that means a drill for holes and an impact driver for long or stubborn screws. Buying both in one kit means they share batteries and a charger, so the gift starts a platform rather than adding one more orphan tool.
Before you buy, find out whether they already own cordless tools from another brand. If they do, a second battery system is usually unwelcome.
Two tools that share one battery system: a 1/2-in drill for holes and a compact impact driver for long, stubborn screws.
- Drill/driver + impact driver
- 2 × 1.3Ah 20V MAX batteries
- Impact driver: 5.55 in, 2.8 lb
Runs on your DEWALT 20V MAX battery, the car's 12V socket or AC power — tires, bikes and air mattresses alike.
- 20V battery, 12V DC or 110V AC
- Digital gauge with auto shut-off
- High-volume inflate/deflate mode
- DEWALT 20V MAX Drill/Driver and Impact Driver Combo Kit (DCK240C2): Suits new homeowners and DIYers starting on shelves, fences or furniture. The kit includes a 1/2-in drill and an impact driver that measures 5.55 in front to back and weighs 2.8 lb. It also comes with two 1.3Ah batteries and a 3-year limited warranty. Skip it for daily professional work. The brushed motors and small batteries mean more battery swaps on big jobs.
- DEWALT 20V MAX Corded/Cordless Air Inflator (DCC020IB): Suits anyone already on DEWALT 20V MAX, including the recipient of the kit above. It runs on a 20V MAX battery, a car's 12V socket or 110V AC. It also has a digital gauge with auto shut-off and a high-volume mode for air mattresses. It is sold as a bare tool, with no battery, charger or AC adapter.
For the renovator who measures twice
Good layout tools save more frustration than almost anything else in a toolbox. For someone who tiles, hangs cabinets, frames walls or works on an older house, the best gift makes a measurement faster or more certain. Think about how serious their projects are. A whole-room laser is a great gift for a remodeler but overkill for someone who hangs one picture a year.
A compact 25 ft tape with a 1 in wide blade, 15 ft of reach and a magnetic hook that grabs steel studs and conduit.
- Magnetic hook
- 1 in wide blade, 15 ft reach
- Two-sided printing
Three full 360° green lines — level all around the room and two plumb walls — visible to 100 ft and rated IP65.
- 3 x 360° green lines
- 100 ft range (165 ft with detector)
- IP65, 12V MAX battery
Check walls, floors and lumber for hidden moisture without making a single hole — scan, read, and see the level on a nine-LED bar.
- Pinless — no holes
- Senses up to 0.75 in deep
- 4 material settings
- Milwaukee 25 ft Compact Wide Blade Magnetic Tape (48-22-0325): Suits electricians, framers and DIYers who often measure solo. It has a 1 in wide blade with up to 15 ft of standout, a magnetic hook, two-sided printing and a limited lifetime warranty. At about 1 lb, it is heavier than a slim pocket tape.
- DEWALT 12V MAX 3 x 360° Green Line Laser (DW089LG): Suits remodelers and serious DIY renovators. It projects three full 360° green lines visible to 100 ft, with ±1/8 in accuracy at 30 ft and an IP65 rating. A battery, charger and case are included. Skip it for occasional shelf hanging, where a basic cross-line laser is enough.
- Klein Tools ET140 Pinless Moisture Meter: Suits homeowners chasing leaks, as well as painters and flooring installers. It scans up to 0.75 in deep without making holes, has drywall, masonry, hardwood and softwood settings, and weighs 7 oz. Readings are relative, with ±4% accuracy, so a pin meter suits people checking firewood or lumber precisely.
For the hobby woodworker and maker
Hobbyists who make toys, signs, templates or 3D prints tend to value tools that make finishing and fitting easier. Curved edges and correctly sized hardware are two things that often slow a project down. A spindle sander and a digital caliper both solve everyday problems without the setup of a big workshop machine.
Smooth curves and inside cut-outs without burn marks: six drum sizes, 2,000 RPM and an up-and-down stroke that spreads wear.
- 2,000 RPM, 58 OPM
- Six sleeves, 1/2 to 3 in
- On-board accessory storage
Measure outside, inside, step and depth in inches, millimeters or fractions — the easy way to size screws, bolts, drill bits and parts.
- Inch, metric and fractions
- 4 measuring modes
- Battery and case included
- WEN 6510T Oscillating Spindle Sander: Suits scroll-saw and band-saw users who cut curves. It runs at 2,000 RPM with a 5/8 in up-and-down stroke and comes with six sleeves from 1/2 to 3 in. It also has a dust port and a two-year warranty. It is a hobby-grade 1/2 HP machine that weighs about 30 lb, and only 80-grit sleeves are included.
- WEN 10761 Digital Caliper: Suits woodworkers, 3D-printing and electronics hobbyists, and anyone sorting screws. It measures outside, inside, step and depth up to 6.1 in, and reads in inches, millimeters or fractions. It comes with a case and a CR2032 battery. WEN publishes no accuracy figure, so skip it for precision machining.
For the organizer and the hauler
Some DIYers already have plenty of tools. What they lack is a good way to carry, store or move them. Organization gifts are also safer bets because they don't depend on a battery brand. If the person loads up a truck or trailer, see our gifts for car lovers for more road-ready ideas.
40 pockets in a compact 10 in tote with a fully molded base and an orange interior that makes tools easy to spot.
- 40 pockets
- 1680d ballistic weave
- Fully molded bottom
Three stacked boxes on 7 in wheels — roll them as one, or unlatch the top box with one hand and carry just what you need.
- 3 stackable modules
- Carries up to 99 lbs
- 7 in rubber-coated wheels
Self-retracting tie-downs that store their own webbing — no more tangled, knotted straps in the truck bed.
- 1,011 lb working load limit
- Self-retracting webbing
- Lifetime warranty
- Klein Tools Tradesman Pro Tool Tote (5541610-14): Suits electricians, maintenance techs and DIYers with a core hand-tool kit. It has 40 pockets, 1680d ballistic weave, a fully molded bottom and an orange interior that makes tools easy to spot. The open top does not close, so skip it for anyone who needs a bag that zips shut.
- STANLEY 3-in-1 Modular Rolling Toolbox (STST60500): Suits homeowners with a growing collection and handymen moving between jobs. It has three stacked boxes on 7 in rubber-coated wheels, a one-hand release latch, a 99 lb load limit and a limited lifetime warranty. Skip it if they already use another modular storage system.
- Rhino USA 2" x 10' Retractable Ratchet Straps (2-pack): Suits pickup and utility-trailer owners. The self-retracting webbing ends tangled straps. Each strap has a 1,011 lb working load limit, and the straps have a lifetime warranty. At 10 ft, they are short for big, tall loads, and roof-rack users tying down light items may prefer simpler cam straps.
How to pick the right gift
- Ask for a gift receipt. Tool lovers often have exact preferences, and a receipt makes swaps painless.
- Check what they already own. Look in the garage for a battery brand, a tape measure, or a modular storage system.
- Match the battery platform. The combo kit and inflator use DEWALT 20V MAX. The laser uses DEWALT 12V MAX and includes its own battery and charger.
- Check power and extras. The inflator's AC adapter is sold separately. The caliper (CR2032) and moisture meter (9V) include their batteries.
- Think about size and space. The sander weighs about 30 lb and needs bench space. The rolling toolbox stands 30.75 in tall when assembled.
- Match the tool to their skill level. Pro-grade layout tools suit renovators. Beginners get more from versatile basics.

FAQ
Is a drill and impact driver kit a good gift for a beginner?
Yes, in most cases. A drill and an impact driver cover the bulk of everyday drilling and driving. Buying them in a kit means shared batteries and one charger. The main exception is someone who already owns 18V or 20V tools from another brand.
Will the DEWALT inflator work with the combo kit's batteries?
Yes. The DCC020IB runs on DEWALT 20V MAX batteries, which is what the DCK240C2 kit includes. The inflator is tool-only, so on its own it needs batteries the recipient already owns, a 12V car socket, or a separately sold AC adapter.
Do they need a 3 x 360° laser, or is a basic laser enough?
For laying out whole rooms, cabinets, tile or drywall, full 360° lines on three planes save repeated setups. For occasional pictures and shelves, a basic cross-line laser is enough.
How should I shop for tool gifts during Black Friday?
Make a short list now based on their battery platform and what they already own. Then compare current prices on the store pages as sales come and go, since prices change often during the season. Ask for a gift receipt either way.
Prices change often — especially around Black Friday and holiday sales — so we don't show them here. Follow the store links to see the current price and availability.
