At a glance

Our verdict

A fast, non-destructive way for homeowners, inspectors and contractors to trace leaks and check materials before painting or flooring. The trade-off: pinless readings are relative and less precise (±4%) than a pin meter for exact wood moisture content, and only four material settings are calibrated.

A stain on the ceiling, a soft spot by the tub, a basement after heavy rain: a moisture meter tells you how far the water has spread. Klein's ET140 uses an electromagnetic sensor instead of pins, so you can slide it across painted drywall, plaster, masonry and wood without marking the surface. It reads 0 to 100% relative moisture with 0.1% resolution and ±4% accuracy, senses up to 0.75 in deep, and has settings for drywall, masonry, hardwood and softwood. A bright display with a nine-LED bar graph, an audible alert, a hold function and auto power-off make quick work of scanning a room. A 9V battery is included.

Why you’ll like it

  1. 01

Trace a leak across a wall or ceiling without damaging paint or drywall.

  2. 02

Check that drywall, concrete or wood is dry enough before painting, tiling or flooring.

  3. 03

The LED bar and audible alert show wet spots at a glance while you scan.

  4. 04

Survives 6.6 ft drops, so it can live in a toolbag.

Great for

  • Homeowners tracking leaks
  • Painters, flooring and drywall installers
  • Home inspectors

Maybe skip it if

  • You need precise moisture content for firewood or woodworking lumber (a pin meter suits better)

Questions people ask

Does it leave marks on walls?

No. It is pinless and reads through the surface with an electromagnetic sensor, so nothing pierces the material.

Which materials is it calibrated for?

Drywall, masonry, hardwood and softwood, selected with the mode button. Klein notes it is calibrated for these materials only.
