How we chose

We compared maker specifications for brush rolls that resist hair wrap, cordless run time versus corded power, stated filtration, bin size and emptying, and included pet and upholstery tools. Then we matched each pick to a home type and listed who should skip it. Research-based, not used by us.

Pet hair is a different job from everyday dust. It wraps around brush rolls, works its way into carpet and sticks to sofas and car seats. Shedding season also fills a small bin in no time. The right vacuum depends less on a single headline number and more on your floors, how often you clean and whether you can live with a cord.

These six picks come from maker specifications and our buying checklist. We did not use any of them ourselves. We grouped them by type so you can skip straight to what fits your home.

Cordless stick vacuums: quick daily pickups

A cordless stick is the vacuum you will actually grab when the dog has just shaken off on the rug. The trade-off is battery life. Makers usually quote the longest run time in the lowest power mode with the handheld alone, so plan on shorter sessions on carpet at full power. If you have a lot of floor to cover, look for a swappable battery or a dock that makes recharging and emptying easy.

  • Dyson V8 Cyclone — best for apartments and small-to-mid-size homes where hair builds up on rugs and floors.
    • It has a de-tangling Motorbar head and 150 AW rated suction in Powerful mode.
    • Dyson rates it for up to 60 minutes, but that figure is for Eco mode used as a handheld.
    • The click-in battery is swappable, and a full recharge takes 4 hours.
    • Filtration is fully sealed and captures 99.99% of particles to 0.3 microns.
    • Skip it if you have a large, mostly carpeted home or several pets. The 0.14 gal bin fills quickly.
  • Shark PowerDetect Cordless (IP3251) — best for pet owners who vacuum often and hate emptying bins over the trash can.
    • Four sensors (Dirt, Edge, Floor and Direction Detect) adjust the clean, and it picks up going forward and in reverse.
    • The Clean & Empty base empties the 0.7 qt dust cup into a 2 L base that holds up to 45 days of debris.
    • It has HEPA filtration after the motor and a Pet Multi-Tool in the box.
    • Shark rates it for up to 70 minutes in Eco mode as a handheld. Charging takes 6 hours.
    • Skip it if you have no floor space near an outlet for the base.

Corded uprights: carpet-heavy homes

If most of your home is carpet and a shedding dog lives there, a corded upright gives you steady power and a bigger dust cup. The costs are weight and the cord. Both picks here have a Lift-Away pod for stairs, but they differ in one key way for pet owners: only one has a hair-resistant brushroll.

  • Shark Stratos (AZ3002) — best for large, carpet-heavy homes with shedding dogs or cats.
    • DuoClean PowerFins HairPro pairs two brushrolls, and the brushroll is designed not to wrap hair.
    • It has a powered Lift-Away, a 1.5 qt dust cup and Odor Neutralizer Technology.
    • Filtration is Anti-Allergen Complete Seal plus HEPA, rated for 99.99% of dust and allergens.
    • Tools include a crevice tool, an upholstery tool and a HairPro self-cleaning pet power brush.
    • Skip it if you carry the vacuum upstairs a lot. It weighs 22.71 lb.
  • Shark Navigator Lift-Away Deluxe (NV360) — best for carpeted homes with stairs and pets whose hair is short.
    • The Lift-Away pod detaches for stairs, and it has a 25 ft cord and a 0.9 qt dust cup.
    • It has an Anti-Allergen Complete Seal with washable HEPA and foam filters.
    • It weighs 14.42 lb and comes with a crevice tool and an upholstery tool.
    • Skip it if long pet hair is a constant battle. The brushroll is not self-cleaning, so wrapped hair must be cut free.

Light corded stick: no battery to manage

A corded stick fits between the two groups above. It is light like a cordless, but its power never fades and there is no battery to wear out. You will move the plug between rooms, which matters less in a smaller home.

  • Shark PowerDetect Ultra-Light Corded (HZ4002) — best for smaller homes with hard floors and rugs, and owners who want a light vacuum without a battery.
    • It weighs 9.3 lb, has a 30 ft cord and a self-cleaning brushroll.
    • Filtration is HEPA plus Anti-Allergen Complete Seal, rated for 99.99% of dust and allergens to 0.3 microns.
    • Tools include a pet power brush, an upholstery tool and an 8" crevice tool.
    • Skip it if you want cord-free cleaning or a self-emptying dock. The 0.9 qt cup also fills fast in shedding season.

Handheld: sofas, stairs and car seats

Even a great floor vacuum can be clumsy on a couch cushion. A dedicated handheld with a motorized brush handles the places pets actually nap.

  • BLACK+DECKER dustbuster reveal Pet (HLVD320BP07) — best for fabric sofas, pet beds, stairs and quick car cleanups.
    • It has a motorized pet brush, a flip-up brush, a crevice tool and an onboard LED light.
    • The 605 ml dust bowl and the filter are both washable.
    • Run time is about 16 minutes without attachments, and it weighs 4.6 lb.
    • Skip it if you want one vacuum for whole floors. It is a companion, not a replacement.

How to choose

Anti-tangle brush roll. This matters most for pet hair. Look for a brushroll the maker describes as self-cleaning, de-tangling or designed not to wrap hair. The Dyson, Stratos and HZ4002 make this claim. The NV360 does not.

Cordless run time vs corded power. Cordless run times are usually quoted in Eco mode, often for the handheld alone. Expect less time on carpet at higher power. A swappable battery, like the Dyson's, can extend a session. Corded models trade freedom for power that never fades.

Filtration. If anyone in the home has allergies, look for what the maker actually states: a sealed system, HEPA, or both. Washable filters cut down on replacements. For pet dander in the air, a vacuum is only half the job. Our air purifier guide covers the other half.

Bin size and emptying. Small bins fill quickly in multi-pet homes. Compare the stated capacity, or choose a self-emptying base like the IP3251's.

Handheld, stairs and upholstery tools. Check for a pet or motorized brush, an upholstery tool and a crevice tool. Also check whether the vacuum converts to a handheld or has a Lift-Away pod for stairs.

FAQ

Is a cordless vacuum strong enough for pet hair?

It can be. The key is the floor head and how much floor you need to cover. On large carpeted areas, a corded upright avoids running short on battery.

Why are so many of these picks Shark?

Shark offers pet-focused models across many formats, so it fills several categories on this shortlist. Brand variety here is thin. Use the checklist above to compare models from other brands.

Do I need HEPA filtration with pets?

It is worth prioritizing in allergy-conscious homes. Several picks here state HEPA filtration, and the Dyson states fully sealed filtration to 0.3 microns.
