How we chose
We compared maker specifications for temperature control, keep-warm time, capacity, spout type, body materials, safety features and warranty. Then we matched each kettle to a clear need, from pour-over coffee to family-size boiling. Research-based, not used by us.
An electric kettle looks like a simple appliance, but the right one depends on what you pour into your cup.
- Pour-over coffee benefits from a gooseneck spout and controlled temperatures.
- Green and white tea need water below a full boil.
- A busy family mostly wants a large kettle that boils fast and shuts itself off.
We sorted seven kettles by need, using maker specifications and our buying checklist. Each pick says who it suits and who should skip it. Kettles are also a popular holiday gift.
Best kettles for pour-over coffee
Pour-over brewing rewards a slow, steady, aimed stream of water. A gooseneck spout makes that stream much easier to control. Both picks below pair a gooseneck with temperature settings, but they differ a lot in flexibility and features.

- Temperature: 104–212°F in 0.5°F steps.
- Hold mode: 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes.

- Build: full-color display with dial; 304 (18/8) stainless-steel body.
- Capacity and warranty: 0.9 L, with a 2-year extendable warranty.
- The companion app only updates firmware. It does not control the kettle remotely.
- Skip it if you mostly boil large amounts of water for a family.
- COSORI Original Electric Gooseneck Kettle (CO108-NK) — best for pour-over coffee and loose-leaf tea in small households and home offices.

How to choose
Gooseneck (pour-over) vs standard spout
A gooseneck gives a thin, controllable stream, which is ideal for pour-over coffee. A standard spout pours faster for mugs, teapots, French press and cooking. Choose a gooseneck only if you brew pour-over regularly. Otherwise, a standard spout is more practical.
Variable temperature, presets and hold
There are three levels to choose from:
- Boil only: fine for instant drinks, black tea and cooking.
- Presets: cover the common tea and coffee temperatures with one touch.
- Degree-level control: lets you fine-tune each brew.
Also check how long the kettle holds a temperature. Among the picks that have a hold setting, maximum hold times range from 30 to 60 minutes. A longer hold matters if you refill your cup over a long morning.
Capacity
Kettles around 0.8–0.9 L suit one or two people or a pour-over pot. Kettles around 1.7–1.8 L suit families, shared offices and anyone who boils water for cooking. A smaller kettle won't save you trips to the sink if you routinely make several cups at once.
Body material (stainless, glass, plastic contact)
- Stainless steel is durable and is the most common choice among these picks.
- Borosilicate glass lets you see the water but needs more careful handling.
If you want to limit plastic contact with water, read the materials line on the spec sheet. Some kettles list stainless water-contact parts, and some note BPA-free plastic only on the handle or lid pull.
Auto shut-off and boil-dry protection
Auto shutoff turns the kettle off once it boils. Boil-dry protection prevents heating with too little water. Both features are worth having, especially in shared kitchens. Confirm them on the maker's spec sheet before you buy, because not every listing spells them out.
FAQ
Do I need a gooseneck kettle?
Only if you brew pour-over coffee or want a very controlled pour. For tea, French press and general use, a standard spout is faster and easier. The Fellow Corvo EKG Pro and Hamilton Beach 40851 both give you temperature settings without a gooseneck.
What's the difference between presets and exact temperature control?
Presets offer a handful of fixed settings. The COSORI's presets, for example, run from 170°F to 212°F. Exact control lets you choose any temperature in a range, such as the Fellow kettles' 104–212°F in 0.5°F steps. Presets are simpler to use, while exact control suits people who like to experiment.
Can I control the Fellow Stagg EKG Pro from my phone?
No. Fellow's app is for firmware updates only, not remote control. Scheduling is set on the kettle itself.
Which kettle is best for a large family?
Look for 1.7 L or more. The Hamilton Beach 40880 covers simple boiling, and the 40851 adds presets and keep-warm. The Chefman offers 1.8 L in glass, if you're comfortable with a glass body in a busy kitchen.
