How we chose
Chosen for everyday usefulness: established brands, clearly stated output (watts), capacity, speed and protection ratings, USB-C first; in stock for US delivery on Amazon on the review date. Research-based, not used by us.
Some of the most useful tech you can buy is also the least exciting. A charger that fills your phone quickly, a power bank that fits in a pocket, a cable that does not fray after a month: these are the things you use every day, and the difference between a good one and a poor one is easy to feel.
We picked the products on this page for reliability and everyday usefulness rather than headline specs. Each comes from an established brand, each lists the specifications that matter for its job, and each was in stock for US delivery on Amazon when we published this page. These picks are research-based — built from specifications and manufacturer information — and we have not used them ourselves.
Power on the go
A phone-sized power bank covers a long day; a laptop-class power bank covers a trip. Look at the output in watts, not only the capacity in mAh: watts decide how fast a device charges, and laptops usually need at least 45–65 W over USB-C.
Pocket-sized, fast enough for today’s phones, and the cable is built in — so you are never stuck without one.
- 10,000 mAh capacity
- Up to 30 W over USB-C
- Built-in USB-C cable
Real laptop power from three 100 W USB-C outputs, with two cables built in — your charging kit in one block.
- 25,000 mAh / 90 Wh
- Up to 165 W total, 100 W per USB-C
- Two built-in USB-C cables
Chargers and cables
Most phones now charge over USB-C, and a 20 W charger is the sweet spot for many of them. A two-pack keeps one charger by the bed and one at work. For cables, look for USB Power Delivery support and a rating that covers your devices — a 60 W cable charges phones, tablets and many thin laptops, but not every high-power laptop.
Two compact 20 W fast chargers and two 5 ft USB-C cables — one set for the bedside, one for the desk.
- 2 chargers + 2 × 5 ft USB-C cables
- Up to 20 W USB-C fast charging
- USB-C + USB-A on each charger
Two long, braided cables that fast-charge your phone and can power many laptops at up to 60W.
- Up to 60W USB Power Delivery
- Two 6 ft braided nylon cables
- Charging + data (480 Mbps), no video
Desk upgrades
If you spend hours at a computer, an ergonomic mouse with a fast scroll wheel pays off quickly in comfort and time. Portable SSDs are the easiest way to keep a fast backup of photos and projects; they are far quicker than spinning hard disks and more robust when you travel.
A sculpted, quiet mouse that scrolls 1,000 lines a second and puts your shortcuts under your thumb.
- MagSpeed wheel: up to 1,000 lines/s
- Up to 70 days per charge
- Switches between 3 devices
Up to 1,050 MB/s in a rugged IP65 shell built to survive dust, splashes and drops of up to 9.8 ft.
- Up to 1,050 MB/s read, 1,000 MB/s write
- IP65 dust and water resistance
- Survives drops up to 3 m (9.8 ft)
For readers
An e-reader is a small luxury that changes how much you read. E-ink screens are easier on the eyes than a tablet in bright light and at night, and battery life is measured in weeks rather than hours.
A bigger, faster Paperwhite with a glare-free 7" screen, warm light and up to 12 weeks per charge.
- 7" 300 ppi glare-free display
- Up to 12 weeks per charge
- Waterproof (IPX8)
A quick buying checklist
- Match the watts to the device. A charger or power bank that is too weak still works, just slowly; check what your laptop needs before buying a power bank for it.
- Prefer USB-C everywhere. It makes one cable and one charger work for most of your devices.
- Check airline rules for large power banks. Many airlines limit capacity in watt-hours, so read the label before you fly.
- Keep the box and receipt until you are sure a cable or charger works with your devices.
