Our verdict
For anyone who moves photos, video or projects between computers, this is the portable SSD to get: fast, small, tough and encrypted. Two honest caveats — you only get full speed from a 10Gbps USB port, and Samsung’s warranty does not cover damage from liquid, dust or drops despite the rugged rating.
Why you’ll like it
-
01
Copy a full day of photos or video in a fraction of the time a spinning hard drive takes, at up to 1,050 MB/s.
-
02
Built for real life: IP65 against dust and water, and rated for a 3-meter fall onto a metal plate.
-
03
Pocket-sized at 59 × 88 × 13 mm and 98 g, so it slips into a laptop sleeve or camera bag.
-
04
AES 256-bit hardware encryption with password protection keeps client work and personal files private if the drive goes missing.
-
05
Works with Windows, Mac and Android devices, and still connects to older USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports.

Questions people ask
Will I get the full 1,050 MB/s on my computer?
Only from a USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) port. The drive also works with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports, but transfers will be slower, and Samsung notes that performance varies with the system.
Is it waterproof?
It is rated IP65: dust-tight and protected against water jets, but it is not made to be submerged. Keep in mind that the warranty does not cover damage from liquid, dust or drops.
Does it work with Mac and Android?
Yes. Samsung lists Windows 7, Mac OS X 10.10 and Android 5.1 or later. Some systems may ask you to reformat the drive first.
