How we chose
We compared maker specifications for heating system, built-in grinder, milk frothing, temperature control, footprint and water tank size, then matched each machine to the buyer it suits and who should skip it. Research-based, not used by us.
Choosing a home espresso machine usually comes down to one question: how much of the barista work do you want to do yourself? Some machines grind, dose, tamp and steam milk for you. Others give you a pump, a portafilter and a steam wand, and leave the rest to you.
We sorted eight machines from Breville, De'Longhi and CASABREWS into two groups: machines with a built-in grinder and machines that need a separate grinder or pre-ground coffee. These are research-based picks drawn from maker specifications and our buying checklist. We did not use these machines ourselves.
Espresso machines with a built-in grinder
Fresh grinding matters more for espresso than for almost any other brew method. A built-in grinder puts beans-to-cup on one footprint, so you only need room for one appliance. All four machines below include a built-in grinder. They differ mainly in how much they automate.
- The Barista Express is the classic manual workflow. You set the grind, tamp and steam milk yourself.
- The Barista Express Impress adds assisted tamping and self-correcting dosing. Those two steps are where many beginner shots go wrong.
- The Oracle Jet automates grinding, dosing, tamping and milk texturing. It still uses a real portafilter.
- The La Specialista Arte Evo adds Cold Brew and Americano presets to a guided manual workflow.
If you are torn between the two Barista Express models, see our Barista Express vs Barista Express Impress comparison. For more grinder-equipped options, see best espresso machines with a built-in grinder.

- Breville Barista Express — best for first-time home baristas who want the full bean-to-cup process. It has an integrated conical burr grinder with 16 settings and a 15-bar pump with low-pressure pre-infusion, then 9 bar extraction. The Thermocoil heater uses PID control (200°F). It takes a 54 mm portafilter, has a manual steam wand and measures 15.9 × 13.1 × 12.4 in.
- Breville Barista Express Impress — best for beginners who want manual espresso without tamping guesswork. It applies an assisted 22 lb tamp with a 7° twist and auto-corrects the dose to 18 g. It has 25 grind settings, Thermocoil heating with PID and a 54 mm portafilter. Milk steaming is fully manual. It measures 16.6 × 14.4 × 12.2 in.
- Breville Oracle Jet — best for households that make several lattes or flat whites a day. It grinds, doses and tamps automatically. The grinder uses Baratza European Precision Burrs with 45 settings. It has a 58 mm portafilter (22 g dose) and ThermoJet heating with a heated group head and ±1° steps. The Auto MilQ wand offers 104–167°F and 8 texture levels. It makes Cold Brew in under 3 minutes and has a touch screen. It is a large machine at 16.6 × 14.2 × 14.9 in.
- De'Longhi La Specialista Arte Evo — best for iced-coffee fans who also want hot espresso. It has a 15-setting grinder and three temperature profiles. The dial presets are Espresso, Americano, Cold Brew and Hot Water. It uses a thermoblock heater, a 1.66 L tank and a manual steam wand. It has no display or shot timer, and the max cup height is a low 4.45 in.
Espresso machines without a grinder
These machines are smaller and simpler, but they rely on you for the coffee. You can use pre-ground coffee or add a separate burr grinder. The basket type decides which works better:
- Single-wall baskets need a fine, consistent grind. Pairing them with a burr grinder is close to essential.
- Pressurized (double-wall) baskets are more forgiving with pre-ground coffee. The trade-off is that they limit fine-tuning.

- Compare it with its sibling in Bambino vs Bambino Plus.
- De'Longhi Dedica Duo — best for small kitchens and apartments. It is about 6 in wide (13 × 5.9 × 12 in, D × W × H). It has a 15-bar pump and Espresso, Double Espresso and Cold Brew presets. The cool-touch My LatteArt steam wand is manual. Max cup height is 5.85 in, and it comes in four colors. The 1.03 L tank needs frequent refills.

How to choose
Built-in grinder or separate grinder needed
- Built-in grinder: The Barista Express, Barista Express Impress, Oracle Jet and Arte Evo save counter space and simplify setup.
- No grinder: The Bambino Plus, Dedica Duo, Stilosa and CM5418 need pre-ground coffee or a separate burr grinder. Factor that grinder into your plans, especially for single-wall baskets.
Heat-up time and heating system
- ThermoJet (Breville): The Bambino Plus is ready in 3 seconds. The Oracle Jet also uses ThermoJet.
- Thermocoil (Breville): Both Barista Express models use PID-controlled Thermocoil heating.
- Thermoblock (De'Longhi): The Arte Evo uses a thermoblock.
- Boiler: The Stilosa uses a stainless steel boiler.
- Not specified: The CM5418 lists about 1 minute to heat up.
Milk frothing: manual wand vs automatic
- Automatic: The Bambino Plus and Oracle Jet texture milk for you.
- Manual: Every other pick uses a manual wand. A manual wand takes practice, but it gives you full control for latte art.
Pressure gauge / temperature control (PID)
- PID: The Bambino Plus, both Barista Express models and the CM5418 list PID.
- Other temperature control: The Oracle Jet adjusts in ±1° steps. The Arte Evo offers three temperature profiles.
- Pressure gauge: Only the CM5418 has one, which is useful for learning how grind and tamp affect a shot.
- None: The Stilosa has no temperature settings.
Counter footprint and water tank size
- Slim bodies: The CM5418 (5.47 in) and Dedica Duo (about 6 in).
- Large tanks: The Bambino Plus (1.9 L) and Arte Evo (1.66 L).
- Cup height: Check it if you use tall mugs. The Stilosa (4.29 in) and Arte Evo (4.45 in) are low.
Ease of use for beginners
- Most hands-off: The Oracle Jet, then the Bambino Plus.
- Removes the tamping hurdle: The Barista Express Impress.
- Most to learn: The Stilosa and Barista Express ask you to do more by hand.
FAQ
Do I really need a burr grinder for espresso?
For single-wall (non-pressurized) baskets, yes, or a machine with one built in. Pressurized baskets like the CM5418's, or the Bambino Plus's dual-wall basket, are more forgiving with pre-ground coffee.
Is a 20-bar pump better than 15 bar?
Not automatically. The pump rating is the maximum the pump can produce. Breville's specs, for example, list a 15-bar pump that extracts at 9 bar after pre-infusion. Temperature stability, grind and dose usually matter more.
Automatic or manual milk frothing?
Choose automatic (Bambino Plus, Oracle Jet) if you want consistent lattes with no learning curve. Choose a manual wand if you enjoy the craft or want to practice latte art.
