How we chose

We compared maker specifications for motor power, container size, controls, programs, noise features, warranty length and cleaning, then matched each countertop blender to the households it suits and the ones that should skip it. Research-based, not used by us.

A good countertop blender earns its counter space: morning smoothies, blended soups, crushed ice and frozen desserts from one machine. The hard part is choosing between very different designs. Some give you a simple dial and full manual control, others run timed programs and stop on their own, and a few focus on noise, family-size batches or a small footprint.

This page covers countertop blenders only. Each pick is research-based: we read the maker specifications and ran them through our buying checklist. We have not used these blenders ourselves.

Best high-power blenders with manual control

If you like to control texture yourself, for example a bit chunky for salsa or perfectly smooth for soup, a variable-speed dial is the tool you want. Both Vitamix models here use a 2 HP motor and rely on manual control, with no programs or timer. You start and stop every blend.

The 5200 is the big-batch choice. Its 64 oz container suits families, but it stands 20.5 in tall with the container, so measure the space under your wall cabinets first. The E310 Explorian is shorter at 18 in and has a 48 oz container. That makes it easier to fit in most kitchens, and it is a better match for couples and small families than for large households.

  • Vitamix 5200 is best for families and cooks who prefer manual control. It has a 2 HP motor, a 64 oz BPA-free Tritan container, variable speeds 1–10 plus High, a 6 ft cord and a 7-year limited warranty. Skip it if the blender must sit under low cabinets or you want programs.
  • Vitamix E310 Explorian is best for first-time Vitamix buyers and daily smoothie and soup makers. It has a 2 HP motor, 10 speeds plus Pulse, a dishwasher-safe 48 oz container, a mini-tamper in the box and a 5-year full warranty that includes two-way shipping. Skip it if you regularly blend for five or more people.

Best blenders with programs

Programs make sense if you blend on autopilot, such as a smoothie while you pack lunches. You press a button, the blender runs its cycle and then stops. Both picks here also have a built-in cleaning cycle.

The Ascent X2 keeps Vitamix's variable speed and Pulse and adds Smoothies, Frozen Desserts and Soups programs, a self-cleaning program and a digital timer. It also detects which SELF-DETECT container or attachment is fitted. At 17 in tall, it is the most cabinet-friendly Vitamix on this page. The Blendtec Classic 575 uses a sealed touchpad instead of knobs. It has Smoothie, Clean, 60-second and 90-second cycles, and an illuminated LCD counts down every blend.

  • Vitamix Ascent X2 is best for busy households and kitchens with limited space under cabinets. It has a 2.2 HP motor rated at 1500 W, a 48 oz BPA-free container, three programs plus self-clean, a digital timer and a 10-year limited warranty, the longest listed on this page. Skip it if you are happy with manual control, since the E310 or 5200 cover that.
  • Blendtec Classic 575 is best for daily smoothie makers who prefer buttons to dials. It has a 1560 W motor, a WildSide+ jar, 5 speeds plus Pulse, timed cycles and a 2-year warranty. Skip it if a long warranty is your top priority.

Best blender for quieter blending

High-power blenders are loud. If you blend before others wake up or live in an open-plan home, noise can matter as much as power. The Breville Super Q pairs noise-suppression engineering with a dedicated cooling system. It also comes with a personal blender cup, so one machine handles both family batches and single servings.

  • Breville Super Q is best for early risers, open-plan homes and families who also want single-serve smoothies. It has an 1800 W motor, a 68 oz jug plus a personal cup, 12 speeds and 5 one-touch programs, including smoothie, ice crush, frozen dessert and soup. A tamper, spatula and recipe book are included. Skip it if counter space is tight, since it is 18 in high and 10.5 in wide, or if you only blend occasionally.

Best for big batches and crushed ice

For frozen drinks and smoothies for the whole family, pitcher size and ice handling matter most. The Ninja BN701 has the largest container here, a 72 oz pitcher that holds up to 64 oz of liquid. It uses a stacked Total Crushing blade assembly and three one-touch Auto-iQ programs.

  • Ninja BN701 Professional Plus is best for families, crushed-ice fans and anyone upgrading from a weak blender. It has 1,400 peak watts (1,200 W operating), a 72 oz pitcher, 3 Auto-iQ programs and a dishwasher-safe pitcher and blades. Skip it if you mostly make single to-go drinks or want a multi-year warranty, because its warranty is 12 months. The cord is 30 in long.

Best for occasional blending and small kitchens

Not everyone needs a high-performance motor. For shakes, occasional smoothies and crushed ice in a first apartment or dorm, a simpler blender is often enough. The Hamilton Beach Power Elite is only 14.69 in tall. It uses a thermal-shock-tested glass jar, its motor is life-tested for 8,000 frozen drinks, and its cord storage helps keep a small counter tidy.

  • Hamilton Beach Power Elite is best for students, first apartments and people who prefer glass over plastic. It has a 700 W peak motor, a dishwasher-safe 40 oz glass jar, 12 functions on 4 buttons, Ice Sabre blades, a mess-free pouring spout and a 3-year warranty. Skip it if you want silky green smoothies or nut butters every day.

How to choose

Motor power and container size. More power helps with thick blends, frozen fruit and nut butters. That includes the 2 HP Vitamix models, the Ascent X2's 2.2 HP motor, the Blendtec's 1560 W and the Breville's 1800 W. A 700 W motor like the Hamilton Beach's is better suited to lighter, occasional jobs. For container size, a 40–48 oz jar suits one to four people, while 64 oz and up (5200, Super Q, Ninja) suits families. Check the height too: tall blenders may not fit under wall cabinets.

Controls: variable speed vs programs. A dial (5200, E310) gives the finest texture control, but you have to watch the blend. Programs (Ascent X2, Blendtec, Super Q, Ninja) run and stop on their own. The Ascent X2 and Super Q offer both.

Noise. All powerful blenders make noise. If it matters to you, the Breville Super Q is the pick here built around noise suppression, though no decibel figure is published.

Warranty length. Warranty coverage varies widely. The listed warranties are:

  • Ascent X2: 10 years, limited
  • 5200: 7 years, limited
  • E310: 5 years, full, including two-way shipping
  • Hamilton Beach: 3 years
  • Blendtec: 2 years
  • Ninja: 12 months

Cleaning. The Ascent X2 has a self-cleaning program and the Blendtec has a Clean cycle. Dishwasher-safe parts are listed for the E310 container, the Ninja pitcher and blades, and the Hamilton Beach glass jar. The Blendtec's sealed touchpad is also easy to wipe.

FAQ

Do I need a high-power blender for green smoothies?

For ultra-smooth green smoothies and nut butters, a high-power model is the better match. The Hamilton Beach's 700 W peak motor will not match high-performance blenders for those jobs.

Which blender fits under kitchen cabinets?

Measure the gap first. The Hamilton Beach is 14.69 in tall, the Ninja 16.22 in, the Ascent X2 17 in, the Super Q and E310 18 in, and the 5200 20.5 in.

Which pick is best for soups?

The Ascent X2 and the Super Q both have soup programs. The 5200's large container and dial suit cooks who blend big batches of soup by hand.
