Our verdict

If shutting out planes, trains and open offices is your priority, this is the pair to get: Sony’s most advanced noise-cancelling hardware, six-mic AI call pickup and every modern connection from LDAC to LE Audio. The trade-offs: at about 254 g it is heavier than Sony’s lighter models, its 30-hour battery trails some budget rivals, and it carries a flagship price.

The WH-1000XM6 is Sony’s flagship noise-cancelling headphone. Its HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3 is seven times faster than the QN1 in the WH-1000XM5 and adjusts 12 microphones in real time, while the Adaptive NC Optimizer tunes the cancelling to the noise around you, the air pressure and your fit. Calls use six AI beamforming microphones, the sound was co-created with world-renowned mastering engineers, and LDAC, multipoint and LE Audio are all on board. The battery lasts up to 30 hours with ANC on, and the headphones fold into a carrying case with a magnetic closure.

Why you’ll like it

  1. 01

Sony’s QN3 processor is seven times faster than the QN1 in the XM5 and adjusts 12 microphones in real time, so engine rumble and office chatter fade away.

  2. 02

The Adaptive NC Optimizer keeps re-tuning to the noise around you, cabin air pressure and how the headphones sit on your head.

  3. 03

Six AI beamforming microphones focus on your voice, so people hear you clearly on calls and in meetings, even in busy places.

  4. 04

Sound co-created with world-renowned mastering engineers, LDAC for hi-res wireless, and a 10-band EQ in the Sony app to make it yours.

  5. 05

A wider headband and smooth vegan-leather cushions are designed for a pressure-free fit on long flights.

  6. 06

Folds into the supplied case with a magnetic closure, and a 3-minute charge gives up to 3 hours with a USB PD adapter.

Great for

  • Frequent flyers and long-distance commuters
  • Remote workers who take a lot of calls
  • Listeners who want hi-res sound over Bluetooth

Maybe skip it if

  • Weight matters more to you than maximum noise cancelling
  • A budget ANC pair already covers your daily commute

Questions people ask

How fast does the WH-1000XM6 charge?

A full charge takes about 3.5 hours. A 3-minute top-up gives up to 1 hour of playback, or up to 3 hours with a USB Power Delivery adapter (sold separately).

Does it work with iPhone?

Yes. iPhones connect over AAC; LDAC hi-res streaming needs a compatible Android phone or other LDAC source. The Sony | Sound Connect app is available for both.

Does it fold for travel?

Yes. The earcups rotate flat and fold toward the headband, so it fits the supplied carrying case, which closes with magnets.

Can I use it with a cable on a plane?

Yes. A headphone cable of about 1.2 m is in the box, and the headphones also work wired while switched off.
