If you are shopping for premium noise-cancelling headphones this holiday season, the choice usually narrows to these two. The Sony WH-1000XM6 is Sony's most advanced noise-cancelling pair, and the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) carry what Bose calls its best noise cancelling, plus spatial Immersive Audio.
On paper they look close: both are rated for up to 30 hours with noise cancelling on, and both connect to two devices at once. The differences show up in the details: codecs, wired options, charging, weight and extras like Cinema Mode. This comparison is based on maker specifications and our buying checklists, not on our own listening sessions.
Noise cancelling approach
Sony builds the WH-1000XM6 around its HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3, which tunes 12 microphones. Sony describes it as its most advanced noise cancelling to date. If blocking out engine drone and office chatter is the main reason you are buying, this pair is designed for exactly that.
Bose positions the QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen) as having its strongest noise cancelling, then layers on listening features: Immersive Audio (in Still and Motion modes) and Cinema Mode. Both makers call these their top noise-cancelling headphones, so the real question is what you want alongside the quiet. Sony leans into cancellation hardware and hi-res Bluetooth. Bose leans into spatial sound for movies and music.
For a broader look at what matters in ANC (fit, seal, controls), see our guide on how to choose noise-cancelling headphones.
Battery with ANC on
Both headphones are rated for up to 30 hours with noise cancelling on, but the fine print differs:
- Sony WH-1000XM6: up to 30 h with ANC, dropping to up to 26 h when streaming over LDAC. With ANC off, up to 40 h. Full charge takes about 3.5 h.
- Bose QC Ultra (2nd Gen): up to 30 h with ANC, dropping to up to 23 h with Immersive Audio on. With ANC off, up to 45 h. Full charge takes about 3 h.
Quick charging is where they split more clearly. Bose quotes 15 minutes for about 3 hours of playback. Sony quotes 3 minutes for about 1 hour, rising to about 3 hours with a USB PD adapter. That adapter is not included, so check whether your existing charger supports USB Power Delivery.
Comfort and weight
The Sony is the lighter pair at about 254 g, against about 264 g for the Bose. That is a modest gap, but it can matter on long-haul flights or all-day desk sessions. Neither is a featherweight. If minimum weight is your top concern, look at lighter models instead.
Both fold for travel. The Sony folds into a case with a magnetic closure, which is handy for bags and carry-ons, and the Bose packs into its included case. One more note for active use: Bose lists no water- or sweat-resistance rating for the QC Ultra (2nd Gen).
Multipoint and calls
Both support multipoint with two devices, so you can stay connected to a laptop and a phone at the same time. Beyond that:
- Calls: Sony uses six-mic AI beamforming for voice pickup, which makes it the clearer pick on paper for remote workers on frequent calls. The Bose facts we used do not detail its call-mic system.
- Bluetooth: Sony uses Bluetooth 5.3 with SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 (LE Audio). Bose uses Bluetooth 5.4 with SBC, AAC and aptX Adaptive (on Snapdragon Sound devices), with a rated range of 30 ft (9 m). No LDAC on the Bose.
- Wired listening: Sony works wired with the included 1.2 m 3.5 mm cable. Bose offers lossless audio over USB-C (16-bit / 44.1–48 kHz). Its analog cable uses a 2.5 mm plug on the headphone side (a 3.5 mm cable is included), so a spare standard cable won't fit.
Who should buy the Sony WH-1000XM6
- Frequent flyers and long-distance commuters who want Sony's most advanced noise cancelling
- Remote workers who take a lot of calls and want six-mic AI beamforming
- Android listeners who want hi-res streaming over LDAC, or who want LE Audio (LC3) support
- Anyone who wants a carrying case with a magnetic closure
- Skip it if weight matters more to you than maximum noise cancelling, or a budget ANC pair already covers your daily commute
Who should buy the Bose QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen)
- Travellers who watch films on planes and trains and want Immersive Audio and Cinema Mode
- Laptop and phone users who want lossless wired audio over USB-C
- Bose fans upgrading from older QuietComfort models
- People who want the longer ANC-off battery (45 h vs 40 h)
- Skip it if you want the lightest headphones possible, need LDAC for hi-res streaming from Android, or need a water-resistance rating

FAQ
Which has the longer battery life?
With noise cancelling on, they tie at up to 30 hours. With ANC off, the Bose leads (45 h vs 40 h). With premium features on, Sony's LDAC figure (26 h) is higher than Bose's Immersive Audio figure (23 h).
Which is better for iPhone users?
Both support AAC, the codec iPhones use, so Sony's LDAC and Bose's aptX Adaptive advantages largely don't apply. Choose based on the other differences: Sony for call mics, lighter weight and the magnetic-closure case; Bose for Immersive Audio, Cinema Mode and lossless USB-C wired audio.
Is either a good holiday gift?
Yes. Both suit travellers and tech lovers. Match the pick to the person: Sony for commuters and call-heavy workers, Bose for movie watchers. For more ideas, see our gifts for travelers and the full noise-cancelling headphones picks.
