Our verdict

For a medium or large home on an internet plan of up to about 1 Gbps, this is the easy, affordable way to end Wi-Fi dead zones. It is Wi-Fi 6 rather than 6E or 7, has no dedicated wireless backhaul band, and its ports top out at 1 Gbps — so multi-gig plans and very busy homes should look at newer, pricier systems.

If your router leaves dead zones in far bedrooms or upstairs, a mesh system fixes it by spreading several units around the home under one network name. The Deco X55 3-pack uses Wi-Fi 6 (AX3000: up to 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz with 160 MHz channels plus 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz), and TP-Link rates it for up to 6,500 sq ft and about 150 devices. Every unit has three gigabit Ethernet ports and can be linked by cable for wired backhaul, and the Deco app handles setup, parental controls and HomeShield security.

Why you’ll like it

  1. 01

Cover the whole home: three units form one seamless network that TP-Link rates for up to 6,500 sq ft.

  2. 02

Wi-Fi 6 with 160 MHz channels gives modern phones and laptops up to 2402 Mbps on the 5 GHz band.

  3. 03

Three gigabit ports on every unit let you wire a TV, desktop or printer wherever a Deco sits.

  4. 04

If your home has Ethernet in the walls, link the units by cable for a faster, steadier backbone.

  5. 05

Free HomeShield basics add a firewall, IoT protection and parental controls with bedtimes and time limits.

  6. 06

Use it as your main router or in access-point mode, and add any other Deco model later to extend it.

Questions people ask

Do I still need my internet provider’s modem?

Yes. Deco replaces your router, not your modem: connect one unit to the modem and place the others around the home. If your provider’s box is a modem-router, Deco can also run in access-point mode.

Can I add more units later?

Yes. TP-Link says the X55 works with every other Deco model in the same mesh network.

Do I have to pay for HomeShield?

No. The Basic plan with the firewall, IoT protection and core parental controls is free; the Pro plan adds extra features for a fee.
