Our verdict

For people who care about drip coffee that tastes like a good café's, this is a buy-once brewer with an unusually long 5-year warranty. It is expensive, it has no programmable timer, and Moccamaster says the carafe keeps coffee at its best for up to an hour — fine for a morning pot, not for all-day sipping.

The KBGT is the thermal-carafe version of Moccamaster's classic brewer. It heats water to 196–205°F — the range coffee experts recommend for drip — and fills a 1.25 L (40 oz, 10-cup) carafe in 4–6 minutes. Instead of a hot plate, coffee goes straight into a glass-lined stainless-steel thermal carafe with a brew-thru lid and a travel lid, and the automatic drip-stop basket lets you pull the carafe mid-brew. Each brewer is handmade at the Technivorm factory, is ECBC certified and SCA approved, switches off 12 minutes after brewing, and carries a 5-year warranty.

Questions people ask

What grind should I use?

Moccamaster recommends a medium-coarse grind, similar to coarse sand or sea salt; most pre-ground bagged coffee is too fine.

Which filters work best?

Oxygen-whitened paper filters. Moccamaster says brown unbleached filters can add a cardboard taste and permanent mesh filters can clog with coffee oils.

How often should I descale it?

Every 100 brew cycles, or at least every three months. Avoid distilled or reverse-osmosis water, which Moccamaster says can damage the heating element.
