- How we compared
A password manager creates a strong, different password for every account, remembers them and fills them in for you. That fixes the habit of reusing a few passwords everywhere, which lets one data breach spread across many accounts. 1Password and NordPass are two popular choices. Both encrypt your vault so that, by their own description, the company can't read it. They differ in how you start, how many people a family plan covers, which security extras need a paid plan, and how first-year pricing works.
This page compares the two using each company's published plans and documentation. If you're new to password managers, our beginner's guide to password managers and switching safely covers setup step by step.

The real differences
Starting free vs starting with a trial
This is the biggest practical difference. NordPass Free costs nothing and needs no credit card. It covers one user with autosave and autofill, the password generator, import and biometric unlock. The main limit is that Free doesn't allow simultaneous sign-in on several devices. If you use a laptop and a phone at the same time, that matters. Free also includes a 30-day Premium trial, so you can try the paid features first.
1Password has no free plan. Its Individual and Families plans both come with a 14-day free trial, no credit card required (as of October 2026). After that, you pay. In return, the Individual plan includes apps on all your devices.
How each one protects your vault
Both say they are built so the company can't read your data, but they explain it differently.
- 1Password generates a Secret Key on your device when you create your account. It combines that key with your account password to encrypt your data. 1Password says the key has about 128 bits of entropy and that it never has a copy, so data on its servers can't be decrypted without it. The trade-off: 1Password can't recover your Secret Key, and the key isn't a backup for a forgotten password. That's why 1Password gives you an Emergency Kit, which you should save and keep somewhere secure.
- NordPass describes XChaCha20 encryption with a zero-knowledge architecture and Argon2id key derivation, audited by the security firm Cure53. You can unlock it with Face ID, Touch ID or a security key.
Security reports, breach alerts and one-time codes
1Password's Watchtower is included in its plans. It flags:
- weak and reused passwords;
- logins on sites with a reported breach;
- sites where you could add a passkey or two-factor authentication;
- expiring cards and documents.
NordPass splits these features across tiers. Password Health flags weak and reused passwords. The Data Breach Scanner alerts you if your logins, emails or payment cards appear in known security incidents. The built-in NordPass Authenticator generates two-factor codes and can autofill them. All three need Premium or Family. The free plan doesn't include them.
Family sharing and extras
1Password Families covers up to 5 people. It includes everything in Individual, plus unlimited shared vaults, simple admin controls and 1 GB of storage per person. NordPass Family covers 6 user accounts.
NordPass's paid plans also add email masking, file attachments and Emergency Access. 1Password's plans include secure item sharing. For anything not listed here, check the vendor's page.
Moving your passwords in
Both make switching manageable. 1Password lists imports from:
- browsers;
- Bitwarden, Dashlane, KeePass, Keeper, LastPass and RoboForm;
- any CSV file.
On iOS/iPadOS 26+ or Android 14+, 1Password also offers "Migrate data into 1Password". NordPass includes import tools for browsers and other managers, and import is part of its free plan.
Who should choose 1Password
- Households of up to 5 people who want shared vaults and simple admin controls.
- People who value an extra encryption layer. The Secret Key means server data can't be decrypted without a key 1Password never holds.
- Anyone who wants security alerts included. Watchtower covers weak, reused and breached logins, plus missing two-factor authentication and passkeys.
- People switching from another manager like Bitwarden, LastPass or Dashlane, given 1Password's wide import list.
- Buyers willing to sign up on 1Password.com to get the first-year promotional price.
Skip it if you don't want to pay at all, because there's no free plan.
Who should choose NordPass
- Beginners who want to start free and only use one device at a time.
- Families of up to 6 looking for the lower first-year family price in this comparison: $3.69/mo, $44.28 for the first 12 months (as of October 2026).
- People who want breach alerts, Password Health and an authenticator in one app, and are happy to pay for Premium or Family.
- Users who like a security key or biometric unlock.
- Existing NordVPN users who prefer an app from the same company, Nord Security.
Skip the free plan if you need to be signed in on your laptop and phone at the same time.
When neither fits
- You use one browser and want something simple: the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) lists free built-in browser password managers as a valid option.
- You want a free plan that works on many devices at once: Proton Pass Free offers unlimited logins and unlimited devices, plus 10 hide-my-email aliases (as of October 2026).
FAQ
Does 1Password have a free plan?
No. 1Password offers a 14-day free trial with no credit card required on both Individual and Families (as of October 2026). After the trial, you need a paid plan.
Is NordPass Free enough for one person?
It can be, if you use one device at a time. It includes autofill, autosave, the password generator, import and biometric unlock. It doesn't include simultaneous sign-in on several devices, Password Health, the Data Breach Scanner or the authenticator.
What happens if I forget my master password?
It depends on the recovery options you set up. 1Password says it can't recover your Secret Key and that the key isn't a backup for a forgotten password, so keep your Emergency Kit safe. With NordPass, set up every recovery option the app offers. For details, check the vendor's page.
Will the price go up after the first year?
Yes, for both. 1Password Individual renews at $3.99/mo and Families at $5.99/mo. NordPass Premium renews at $35.88 a year and Family at $71.88 a year (as of October 2026). 1Password's promotional price applies only when you subscribe on 1Password.com.
